Telur Gulung - Delicious Rolled Omelette

Telur gulung, or rolled omelette, is a popular dish in many Asian cuisines, particularly in Japanese cuisine where it's known as "tamagoyaki." It's a versatile and delicious dish that can be enjoyed on its own, with rice, or used as a filling in sushi or bento boxes. Here's a basic recipe for making telur gulung:

Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (for savory version)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for cooking
  • Fillings of your choice (such as chopped vegetables, cheese, cooked shrimp, crab meat, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:

    • Crack the eggs into a bowl. Add milk, soy sauce (if using), salt, and pepper. Beat the mixture until well-combined and slightly frothy.
    • Prepare your fillings by chopping them into small pieces if necessary.
  2. Cooking the Omelette:

    • Heat a non-stick frying pan or tamagoyaki pan over medium heat. Add a small amount of oil and spread it evenly across the pan using a paper towel or brush.
    • Once the pan is heated, pour a thin layer of the egg mixture into the pan, just enough to cover the bottom.
    • When the edges of the omelette start to set but the center is still slightly runny, use chopsticks or a spatula to gently roll the omelette from one side of the pan to the other, creating a log shape.
    • Push the rolled omelette to one side of the pan and add a little more oil if needed. Pour another thin layer of the egg mixture into the pan, making sure it flows under and around the rolled omelette.
    • Once the new layer starts to set, roll it up along with the existing omelette, creating a larger roll. Repeat this process until all the egg mixture is used, adding fillings of your choice between each layer if desired.
  3. Finishing Touches:

    • Once the omelette is fully rolled and cooked through, transfer it to a cutting board.
    • Let it cool slightly before slicing it into rounds or rectangles, depending on your preference.
    • Serve the telur gulung warm or at room temperature as a snack, side dish, or part of a meal.

Feel free to experiment with different fillings and seasonings to customize the telur gulung to your taste. Enjoy your delicious rolled omelette!
